Complex and elaborate embroidered buttons, created at the same time as the embroidered garment that they were to be used on, were at theirheight of popularity in the 18th century. By the 19th, ladies' manuals included designs so that all needleworkers could embellish their garments.
Knot buttons have a very long tradition - at perhaps their most popular for doublets during the 16th & 17th centuries. Much later, leather knot buttons were popular, drawing on the same traditions and techniques.
